On the train to Malbork

The knights sold the castle in 1457 to King Casimir IV of Poland in lieu of their pay. This separated the castle from the city in political terms, as the citizens there did resist Poland.

The castle and its museum are listed as UNESCO's World Heritage Sites.

After a 72km, 1h40min ride to Krynica Morska we finally arrived! The shore of the Baltic Sea.

There was hardly any beach on this side.

Under continuous construction for nearly 230 years, Marienburg Castle/Malbork, is actually three castles nested in one another. A classic example of a medieval fortress, it is the world’s largest brick castle and one of the most impressive of its kind in Europe.

Probably the most photographed object in Gdańsk. The Zuraw built in 1442-1444. It was used as a crane to load and unload ships

The plan was to reach the Russian border. We never made it. After 7.5km of walking along the beach we decided to return.

Sunset on the last day. It was time to go home. It was a helluva good trip!! >2000km for 85€.

Founded in the 13th century by the Teutonic Knights, Malbork is noted for its Gothic castle, one of the most striking in Europe. Here the main gate of the castle.

In September 1772 Malbork was captured by Prussian troops. They took up residence in the High Castle within the barracks which had been set up there by a Polish infantry regiment in 1737-44.

This is on the other side of the Mierzeja Wislana, only a couple hundred meters wide. You could see one end from the other.

During the Thirteen Years War, the castle of Marienburg was pawned by the Teutonic Order to their imperial soldiers from Bohemia.

The castle was in the process of being restored when World War II broke out. During the war, the castle was over 50% destroyed. Restoration has been ongoing since the war.

Totally destroyed during WWII it was successfully rebuilt in full.

Built by Regnier from Amsterdam and Hans Dresden 1564-1568 this is the Green Gate. Green because of the colour of the stones used to build the bridge that leads to this gate. Since 1570 the Gate was used as a palace for the Polish monarchs (not for long).
